Ambon
From Jakarta there are regular flights to Ambon Island which is situated in, and is the most prominent island in the Maluku islands. It is an idyllic spot which is lush, tranquil and gently mountainous and features two huge crescent shaped bays. Ideally situated to visit some of Indonesia’s most delightful, yet utterly undiscovered gems: the Lease, Banda and Kei Islands. Ambon offers some terrific scuba diving possibilities. The average temperature is 80oF., rarely sinking below 72oF. Rainfall can be heavy, especially after the eastern monsoons, and the island is vulnerable to violent typhoons. The dry season is from October to April during which time the west monsoon occurs.
Flights to AmbonThe native Ambonese are of mixed Malay-Papuan origin and are mostly of the Christian or Muslim faith. There are strong ethnic tensions on the island between Muslims and Christians and during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s there were religious riots. All has been quiet for a good number of years, however, travellers should be aware and not take part in any public gathering.
The main language of the island is Ambonese Malay, also called Ambonese. In and around Ambon City Indonesian is also widely spoken. |
