Sorong
Regular flights to Sorong are available from Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta. Sorong is an excellent base for visitors wishing to go diving, trekking or to take part in one of many birdwatching tours in western Papua. The nearby Raja Ampat islands offers one of the world’s most diverse reef systems and attracts many visitors each year. Many people in the oil and gas industry take flights to Sorong which has become a hub for Indonesia’s thriving eastern oil and gas production.
Sorong is a coastal city in the eastern Indonesia province of West Papua. It is the gateway to Indonesia’s coral reef, Raja Ampat Islands.
History.
West Papua was formerly known as Irian Jaya Barat until early 2007 when the current name was adopted. Regional and national legislation was required to formalise the name change.

The Melanesian people of Sorong are mostly of the Christian or Islam faith.
Language.
The language of Sorong and West Papua is Indonesian.
Population.
West Papua has one of the smallest in Indonesia with only around 800,000 inhabitants.
To see and do.
Most visitors travel to Sorong for it’s stunning coral reefs around the Raja Ampat islands where a huge diversity of marine life can be found. Diving is therefore one of the area’s main attractions. Sorong is also an excellent centre for trekking and birdwatching tours.
